Call me clueless but I'm having a bit of sticker shock right now looking at rental prices. For a studio in a decent area the lowest I can find is 1100-1200+ for a 1 bedroom or bigger it goes higher and higher.

How does everyone afford these prices? I have a good job but admit I don't want to spend that much on a rental. Not interested in buying until I find an area of town I like. I have been offered a work opportunity in the Pasadena area. I don't mind a commute within reason but even there rentals are $1300+ for a studio or one bedroom.

How does everyone afford these prices? Is the minimum wage different(higher) here? Moving from Vegas where we bought a 2500 square foot house in a decent area for $89k so again I'm just having sticker shock.

No hate please, I just want some words of wisdom from the locals.

You can find much cheaper rentals in less than the most desirable areas. There are lots of them in LA county. If you want to live near Pasadena, you can check out the cities of Alhambra or San Gabriel and east of Arcadia. Also the Los Angeles areas of Highland Park, El Sereno, Hermon, and Eagle Rock.

No hate but I'd stay where you are right now. Expensive, very difficult to find work and the minimum wage is $8.00

we actually went to Vegas looking for a house a couple months ago, and your'e right, home prices in Vegas are rock bottom! We saw a lot of houses where we just went "This is how much?? Is that a typo?? Should you be adding a '1' in front of that number??"

Live with a roommate until you have a stronger foothold here.

Take a stroll in Pasadena City College and Caltech and look for roommate-wanted fliers.

Try looking in Altadena but the higher into the mountains the safer the neighborhood.

Welcome to the LA rental market where rent is shockingly high for mediocre apartments. Here's a funny video to cheer you up:
