I am going to be going to Long Beach for as long as a week to look at CSU Long Beach and am wondering if anyone knows of any cheap motels that are in safe areas to stay in either Long Beach or Orange County near Long Beach, that are preferrably nearby to the school and not too far from the beaches in Orange County as I am planning to do some surfing. I figure Motel 6 might be my best option but I know in some places, like San Diego, they have a lot of cheap motels that are cheaper than any chain.

There is a Motel 6 on 7th Street so close to LB State you can walk...other than that, you can maybe try the Golden Sails (part of Best Western...can't remember) on PCH, which is also very close to school, or you can also try the Seaport Marina Hotel, which is in the same vicinity. All of these appear to be modestly priced hotels and all are close to where you need to be.

Be careful about the Motel 6 on 7th Street. I know of an aquaintence who stayed there for 2 weeks before moving in to her new place. Very nice young college girl. She said at night she never felt safe going out - too many bums and homeless people. During the day she was fine. I would look into Golden Sails (south of 7th on PCH) or the Guesthouse, (north of 7th on PCH).
