Which places in/near LA would you recommend for a straight couple in their early 40s, no kids, who want a safe, walkable area with some amenities nearby (grocery store, coffee shop, park, etc.). A relatively quiet area, with some degree of artsy vibe would be great. We’d like to be near nature/trails as well, either within walking or a short driving distance. This would be for renting an apartment/house. Don’t know where jobs would be yet, just speculating on locales. Would Topanga be one option that would fit the bill? I'm also interested in Silver Lake, but wonder if it'd be too bustling/densely populated for us...?

topanga is a neat area, but it doesn't really fit the requirement of having amenities nearby. there are a few things up there, but not much. it is not bustling at all except for commuters trying to get to the westside from the west valley. traffic through the town can get pretty bad during the work week. and LA is huge, so you'll really want to decide where to live based on where you'll be working, rather than the other way around. good luck!

When people post on here looking for recommendations for where to live - it's so open-ended because this metro area is so huge and diverse.

What's your budget?

Topanga is very remote - although there are hiking trails, it's not a walkable area by any means.

BRinSM is right - you should get the job(s) first, then that will narrow down your choices of where to live.
