Due a job offer, I might move to LA with a car that I leased from different state. I leased a new car about 6 months ago. I checked out CA’s DMV registration fee calculator, and it will charge me around $1500 for sales/use tax.

Of course, I had already pay sales tax and other fees at my current state, but it seems that I need to pay more to CA.

I learned that vehicle that is 12+ months old does not get charged for sales/used tax. I am wondering if I can move to CA and wait for 6 months and then register the car? Of course my old plate and license card won’t be expired.

Is this practical?

I am devastated since, relocation fees are drying up my bank accounts and don’t have spare cash to pay such large sum.

Rewind.

A few questions:

1) What is your home state?
2) How are leases taxed in your home state? (use tax on monthly payment or up front collection?)
3) What was the breakdown between actual registration fees and tax collection?

In CA, taxes on leases are collected on the monthly payment, and yours should be no different.

1) SC
2) paid ~$50 registration fee but paid ~$400 for tax. No sales tax incurs on monthly lease payment.
3) I used CA registration fee calculator and it says that registration fee is around ~$250 but Sales/Use tax is ~$1300

I'm not sure that math works out, are you 100% sure? Are you sure they didn't roll a bigger tax number into the lease?

how much are your lease payments? was your sales tax 6% when you purchased?

Is your car valued in the 20-25k ballpark right now? seems about right based on a $250 reg fee.

Yes, sales tax of 6% was part of calculation for monthly lease payment.
My car is valued around 20k as you mentioned.
My payment per month is around $300.

Do you know whether your lease calculated sales tax on the full sale price of the vehicle or just on the total lease payments?
Did the DMV calc take into account (give credit to) sales taxes already paid in another state?

They give you a number of months...

I know people who wait a little and then switch their car over...

I'll be in the same boat in March 2013 when I get to California. I leased a new car in Texas last month and here we pay 6.25% on the full purchase price minus our trade in value, not on the lease payment. If i register my car in California in March would my lease payment be affected and would I get credit for the tax I did pay here? Could I get around that by not registering my vehicle in the state until July, 12 months after purchasing it? (I'm aware of the implications of this).
