The west side is mostly cafe culture. I have no suggestions beyond "unplugged" type stuff in coffee houses. Venture to the wilds of the Sunset Strip. L.A. Weekly is your friend. If you haven't discovered it, there's TONS of stuff in the back.

Paniolo Cowgirl is on a distinguished road
For folk music there's McCabe's on Pico a couple blocks west of Centinela.

Also Boulevard Music in Culver City.
