West LA live music venues
Alright, so I moved out here from Columbus, OH 1 year ago and have managed to adapt to LA pretty well. I live near SaMo Blvd just west of the 405 and have been able to find lots of great restaurants, cafes, bars, etc... The one thing I'm really struggling to find are good, relaxed places to catch live music in WLA. Where do you guys know of that's good to catch local bands around here? I would think with UCLA being so close that there would be an abundance with all the college students... but I must be missing it. Please help! I miss my music!

Unless you're including the Sunset Strip and WeHo as part of the Westside (most people would), there isn't much worthwhile. Liquid Kitty in West L.A. is the only place that has consistently decent quality bands. Beyond Baroque and McCabes are not exclusively rock venues but do get good quality entertainment.
West L.A.'s problem with rock clubs goes back a long time. Since the closing of the Music Machine in Santa Monica and a short lived club whose name I forget in Culver City's industrial zone on Jefferson, there hasn't been a good one. And even then there were crappy ones, like Madame Wong's West or Club 88. Clubs that focus on blues, world music, electronica, and (increasingly) hip hop have seemed to do better.
Occasionally decent bands pop up at otherwise nowhere venues like SM's 14 Below, Mar Vista's Good Hurt, or Pico/Robertson's The Joint, but there is a lot of subpar crap in those places as well. Those places tend to attract unknown bands just starting out. The same is true of O'Brien's in SM, or the Cat Club on the Strip. Or for that matter the Whisky nowadays. (If we're talking about the Strip, the Roxy, Troubadour, and House of Blues still get bigger names ; the Viper Room has a mix of names and unknowns which is by west side standards of good quality. The Largo on Fairfax is just barely "west side" but has some pretty good acts.)
The problem is that the rock scene has moved east as the rents on the west side have soared. The more happening spots are in Silver Lake and Echo Park, and even beyond (e.g. Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Glendale, downtown). One would think with Venice's demographics and residents there'd be a great rock club there, but there hasn't been one in years.

I saw suicidal tendencies perform at some bar on Sepulveda blvd at national. next to the hamburger hamlet. This was several years ago, but they did have a stage for live music.

OMGosh I have been to that place on Jefferson. !!! Looong time ago. Now it
's gonna drive me crazy thinkin about the name !!!
Loyola Marymount got a visit from Fleetwood Mac even before renovations at the montrous level. Again, long time ago. Royce Hall, yep still gets the "in" crowds. But real trendy performers will do like a Universal Ampitheater at
$ 2500 a seat cause they can't fill Staples or the Pond, but are to money hungry to do a bunch of college circuits for less.
We saw Michael Hedges at McCabes long time ago. At least I think that was him buried under ALOT of hair !! Must have been shy back then ??? LOL
Saw George Winston at Royce Hall I think it was, barefoot. LOL !
Those were the good Westside Days
Gosh I gotta hit the road right now to get my mom over the hill, the Sepulveda Pass, not my mom ! LOL and I am dreading it !!
Gonna see if I can get a neighbor to tag along for the carpool benefit sheesh !

I wasnt aware of this, but, not far away, Liquid Kitty on Pico near Barrington is a very good low key venue.
Another decent low key venue, albeit one that is barely "west side': Molly Malone's on Fairfax and 6th. The Mint on Pico is a decent venue, and has had big names, but that's really Mid City West if you want to get technical about its location.

That Culver City club had black walls inside, but the name escapes me too! I used to like the rare punk rock gigs at Hop Singh's in Venice. The Joint at the Beverly Hills/West Hollywood cusp has live, usually original rock.
Here's a site for current club bookings.
Hollywood Clubs and Los Angeles Area Clubs Music Calendar.
Shonen Knife at the Knitting Club (Hollywood) in 2 months looks promising, plus Chevelle at HOB.
To add to majoun and chattycathy's wealth of knowledge, live music clubs' existences are tied into liquor licenses, which are somewhat difficult to establish anew in L.A. for clubs as opposed to restaurants. Does anyone on this board know if bands still post flyers for their local gigs at UCLA?

Probably so long ago that Fleetwood Mac didn't have any female members at the time....
