this place is real and delicious and in the valley Defranko's Submarines - Best Submarine sandwiches in the LA area since 1974

and the westside isn't all trendy wine bars, my faves are la cabana, norms (for a good hangover breakfast), johnnie's pastrami, C&O, etc...

By that rule I guess I'm real while I'm at work and at home I'm a faker. Not a complete phoney though! I live a block away from fairfax so I get some points there.

I think the focus shouldn't be so much on what's "real" but the difference in taste and even attitude.

Sometimes I don't feel like being in a spot where people just look too carefree and insufferable, clearly arrogant but nice enough to be considered "humbly arrogant". A place where I cannot tell if life is immitating art or vice versa because everyone there acts a lot like they do in the mainstream movies. I even see people jogging in the same gear, having the same conversations, same attitude as those in the films.

It's actually quite wild if you think about it. I feel like the kids in the movie Pleasantville. Only instead of being transported to 1950s heartland America, I am transported to a late 2000s yuppie dramedy. LOL.

So what's real? I don't know! OR Hollywood just makes movies about their friends.

I guess it's a little hard to define real. How about any dive bar in the San Fernando Valley north of Ventura BLVD? Huge swaths of the valley are ungentrified and there are a lot of options. Many of these communities have people that were actually born in L.A ...not sure if being born here makes you more real or not though...

Also I don't know about this argument that Westside is full of transplants...I think there are a ton in areas like silverlake, echo park, hollywood, ETC ETC .

But a lot of writers write about what they know. They write about their experiences. Hollywood sells an image and creates trends. That's real economics right there.

That's the only reason I can explain movies like This is 40 which showcase southern california yuppie lifestyle.

Is there something controversial about this? Seems like it's OK to talk about ghetto neighborhoods but there is a gasp when talking about affluent ones?
