And now the real hard part- imposing stricter laws on the business owners that hire them. Something tells me that is no easy task.

Question for the board (from a native Californian no longer living there):

How do you *know* if someone is illegal?
Can you tell just by looking at someone?

Only partially true regarding illegals seeking jobs here being the cause for the Malthusian influx, Des Demona. Each and every illegal in Los Angeles qualifies for medical aid that my fellow citizens and I will never receive. Plaidmom, I've accompanied friends to County Hospital obstetric ward, where unfortunates with gynocological cancers are sent as well. If 99% percent of the women we saw there were exactly eight months and three weeks pregnant Latinas, and dressing radically differently from the stylish Latinas we normally see here in all walks of life, I think you might even proffer an educated guess.

So....an educated guess.....based on their clothes and lack of style, and their stage of pregnancy. Yes, very educated and fair, not prejudiced at all.

That is one part...the other part is not to provide any assistance (meaning governmental..etc.) then the illegal immigrants/undocumented workers will not be able to afford living in the U.S. This in itself will be the wall on the border.

It is nonsense to build a wall along the border when all that needs to be done is to stop the assistance. The mexican nationals will learn real quick of the cost of living in the United States.

So you're saying you approve of foreign nationals, many illegal, getting complete medical coverage for free or a genuine pittance in the U.S. when tax-paying American citizens cannot? I consider that to be far more serious prejudice against the residents of our own country. If and when you move your family back up north, let us both hope that no one in it, as naturalized American citizens married to or fathered by you, ever gets ill on your teacher's pay. It will be heart-breaking for you to see them not get necessary treatment while deliberate law-breakers qualify instead.

Perhaps one should clarify that the women were all uniformly 8 months plus a few weeks pregnant, not at all in various stages of pregnancy or even with other children in tow. It was the same each and every time we were there, as if staged by Central Casting.

Putting words in my mouth- no, I`m not saying, never implied, that I aprove of such a thing. I was just a little astonished by your illegal-immigrant-spotting tecnique. So it is: (8months+ pregnant) + (non-stylish clothes) = illegal immigrant.

All I know is that any health care treatment that we get up there will be superior to what we get here.

Why don't we go to MacArthur Park together, I bet I can guess correctly @ least 70%. Or Home Depot on Sunset. While we're at it, maybe we can both get fake IDs saying we're brothers.
Even my latin co-workers can pick them out. My wife, who grew up in So. America & works in a medical clinic, is pretty good at it.

Its not a matter of making an educated guess. In metro LA, the sheer number of illegal immigrants makes it a foregone conclusion & the valley where Fastfilm lives is not much different. And you're right in your earlier posts that you really can't blame the illegals only. I place greater blame on the do-nothing govt & the people who employs them. I went to visit an associate's bodyshop and noticed a new employee who could not have been more than 14 yrs old. I asked how he could hire someone who looked so young. He said "he told me he's 18" & shrugged. (???)

We have the same problems in Texas. I can't tell if they are illegal but suspect it when they are involved in a traffic accident, have no documentation, don't speak English, and run when the police are called. Happened to both my son (I was in the car and saw it) and my wife and in both cases we had to claim on uninsured motorist coverage.

While the quality of life has deteriorated taxes have increased to a ridiculous level to service this influx of people that do not speak English and have little resources to care for themselves and their children.

I think this is one of the highest priority problems in the country that is simply ignored in Washington. Too many of our lawmakers spend all of their time in affluent areas that have not yet been seriously impacted, and it will be way too late when they finally see what is happening

They already tried this about 12 years ago with Prop 187. It passed overwhelmingly, only to be ruled unconsitutional.
