Hi,

I am new to LA area and the traffic in LA. I am thinking of taking a per diem job in Downtown LA, Beverly Hills and Encino. My work would start around 7:30 in the morning and end by 3pm. I currently live in Irvine and will be commuting everyday to either Downtown LA or Encino or sometimes to Beverly Hills.

Does anyone has any experience commuting from Irvine to Downtown LA (Little Tokyo area). I assume it will take me an hour if I leave at 6:30am from Irvine. Is the Downtown LA commute manageable? How about if I took the Metrolink. Get on Metro here in Irvine and then Union station in LA and then Bus to Little Tokyo? Has anyone taken this metro trip. Would you drive or take the Metro?

How about Encino? Location is ventura Blvd & Hayvenhurst Ave? I am really tempted to tell them that I can not do this commute because it is approximately 62 miles and will probably take me 2 hours. I don't think I can take the Metro there?

There is another location in Beverly Hills that I might be working. How is the commute from Irvine to BV.

Please recommend me about these commutes and how long it will take me to get to work? Is Metro an option? What is the best time to leave to avoid the traffic in the morning? At 6:30am, is there a lot of traffic on the freeway specially 5 North.

Thanks for everyone's input.

RJ

If it is temporary and you need a job then you need to do what you need to do. (My colleague here in Irvine is commuting daily from Wood Ranch in Simi Valley.)
If it were me I'd look at Metrolink to downtown and if to Encino I'd drive to leave at 5AM from Irvine and kill time online at a Starbucks or go to a gym and work out or something.
I don't know about Little Tokyo. Perhaps you could buy a beater car and keep it downtown and metrolink to downtown and beater car to Little Tokyo or Encino or something like that.

I work downtown and have a handful of coworkers who live in Irvine. They all take the metro link.

All say its an hour commute, but that's only part of the story. Factor in time to get from home to the station and then from the station to work and its more like an hour and a half. Beverly Hills is driving only IMO. Expect an hour and a half...IMO leave at 530 to arrive at 7, but then you have a 30 minute cushion for accident days.

Encino is not as bad as you think again if you leave at 530 or even 515.

The drives back at 3pm aren't horrendous. Again, hour and a half.

It's over an hour to take Metrolink from Irvine to Union Station: Orange County Line Schedule | Metrolink

Leave Irvine 5:26, arrive Union Station 6:40.

This looks like a nasty commute to me.
