I'm not a native San Franciscan, but I've lived there since I was 11 (with stints out of state). Before that I lived in So. California. I will be moving to LA next spring.

I currently live in Cole Valley and I have lived in West Portal and the Inner Sunset. These areas of SF are pretty mellow, quiet, and not very hip. I like a low-key atmosphere. After living with noisy neighbors for years, I'm interested in quiet and perhaps something besides an apartment, like an in-law (though I'm open to a top-floor unit). I will be working mostly in the Glendale and Studio City area. I'd like to keep my expenses low for the first 6-12 months. So maybe rent in the 1000-1500 range for a studio or 1 bedroom. I currently pay $2000, but I'm on rent control so it's much lower than it'd be if I signed up now.

With that said, do you have any suggestions on neighborhoods to check out?

From a Bay Area person who has lived in LA, try: South Pasadena, Montrose or La Crescenta. All low key, safe neighborhoods and a decent commute to the areas you mentioned.

I agree with all of these choices. If you want something even more "off the grid" I would also try Sunland or Tujunga

Or, for a better commute, how about Glendale itself?

You will not feel like you're in a quiet place if you spend a big part of your "off" time driving in traffic.

North Glendale is another possibility, generally quiet, safe and low key. Try to go north of Glendale College, in the hills.
