I am a single senior, rather conservative gay male, needing to find affordable housing ASAP.

I can comfortably pay up to $500/month. I do not want to share a bedroom, and am not interested in renting a room in a private home.

I do not smoke, drink, or use illegal drugs, but I am not uncomfortable around moderate drinking.

I have steady, reliable social security income, but my credit is very poor, so I am unwilling to waste money on a credit check. Cannot pay an exhorbitant securiity deposit, either.

I do lots of volunteer work each week, and am looking for part time paid employment. Since I no longer drive, I need to have easily accessible public transportation.

I hate to be overly blunt - but how do you plan on making this happen?

If you could come up to $750 ish monthly I could see splitting a 2 bedroom in an iffy area - but $500 just doesnt seem like enough.

You, as a single gay senior with limited income, are going to have a really tough time. You can apply to subsidized apartments in senior apartment buildings, but, the waiting lists are usually years long.

There are also those hotels and apartment buildings in Downtown near skid row where one used to be able to get an apartment for about 500 bucks.

Have you considered looking out near Palm Springs? There is a lot of affordable housing in the towns near Palm Springs as well as a large senior, gay community. But probably no real bus service, though.

Palm Springs! there's a large senior gay community there and I'd bet the housing is more affordable. Getting to LA would be pretty difficult though, but Palm Springs has stuff to do and you could make a day trip to LA I think.

SRO Housing Corporation - Housing Options (http://www.srohousing.org/housing_options.htm - broken link)

Single rooms - small, but affordable. I think they base the rent on your income.

I think Long Beach has something similar. I don't think they'll care what your sexual orientation is.

In LA? I don't see how you'd be able to do it.

Has anyone heard of Triangle Sqauare Apts in Hollywood. Its a 104 apt bldg for the Senior LGBT community. I found thier website, but the info is several years old. I wonder if they are still in opertion, or did it not make it and close. I think the premise of senior LGBT apt bldgs has been tried or thought of before (Phoenix comes to mind) but never got off the ground. thanks.

Yeah your options are most likely moving out of LA (maybe Inland empire) or living in a lower income area
