How does the buy a day get a year free ticket deal work?

My parents are in town and I want to take them to Universal and my sister is coming in a few weeks. Would she be able to use the same ticket or do they take your picture like at Disneyland?

Yes, they take your picture or at least they did when I did that pass a few years ago. And it had blackout dates for many of the weekends.

I currently have an annual pass (the one without blackout) and though I have no picture, they do the fingerprint scan at the gate-- so it cannot be used by others

It can be used at the gate. I have an annual pass and have let five friends of mine use it without me. On occasion, the fingerprint scanner would deny them, but I had a friend who would just switch fingers until it worked. And it eventually did. Pay no attention to the fingerprint scanner, its basically a cheap IR sensor.
