I have posted firsthand accounts of the nicer areas as well. Recap: Lakewood Blvd and east is suburban and abuts the curtain; Los Altos, Belmont Shore, the area around El Dorado Park, all nice. Oh yeah, and Bixby Knolls, around the Virginia Country Club.

No problem. I'd like to see how East Long Beach crime stats stack up to Stanton and Santa Ana (OC) crime stats. I'll take East LB anyday.

And how could anyone who had actually BEEN THERE think that Bixby Knolls and it's golf course were dangerous? Punk golfers with their plaid pants and white cleats streaming across the O Curtain in their carts to plunder and pillage.

Hahaha.

[mod cut: moderating comment] How can you say all of Long Beach is bad. Most used to be, but not anymore. Everyone would agree that not all of Brooklyn is still bad, but it did used to be. Not all of Oakland is bad, but some parts are. Same with Long Beach. Long Beach is a large city and just happens to be overshadowed by Los Angeles. However, if it were a city by itself out somewhere else, it would be considered a very nice.

I just think that if someone makes a blanket statement like that, they should be prepared to back it up. For example, what if I bad-mouthed Arkansas with a bunch of bogus and prejudicial statements?

Shouldn't I expect someone to notice?

As far as a warning, I think an objective link or two does the trick.

tired of being inside is on a distinguished road
I've posted to threads about LB before and, as a resident here for almost a year, I can tell you all those who state that it's very diverse with dramatically different neighborhoods, are telling you the truth. I live in downtown, one of the new loft buildings, right next to the Walmart area. They cleaned up downtown a lot, no doubt, but it's hardly nice. There are hipsters and artistic types here and there but it's mostly lower-middle class ethnic families. Yes, there are crazies, lots of street theater which I find amusing but not pleasant. But the architecture is really nice, the streets are lined with palm trees and they really seem to be trying to make it great. Hell, old town Pasadena was decrepid and crime-ridden 10-15 years ago, why can't LBC make a come back? But along Ocean Blvd, east of Pacific is really nice almost the whole way to the Orange Wall, I would definitely recomend it, but west of Pacific, it's either nothing but business and office towers, which shut down after 5 pm or the awful homeless scene near city hall and Lincoln Park.

As for commutes, I regularly have to head up the 405 during rush hours and I can attest that it only gets really bad around Artesia. The closer you get to LAX and Culver City...that's where it is a parking lot. But if you're going to Torrance, it's really not too bad.
