Okay, this question is no joke. I plan to visit LA and sleep in my car because, frankly, I'm poor.

Will I get arrested? Mugged? Die?

What are some safe areas to do this?

I call the cops on people who do that in my neighborhood. I'm tired of seeing people urinate on the curb. I'm serious. Plus I think you're there scoping out the residents' comings/goings.

Get a cheap motel or reserve a campsite.

Is there a full moon on CD tonight?

If you're too poor to visit with appropriate accommodations, maybe you should stay put?

Or maybe a campground?

Not everybody could afford such things.

Most cities, including those in LA county, have ordinances against using your vehicle for dwelling on public streets. Most people, however, don't go out of their way to bring the law down on people. Don't park in business parking lots. Cops tend to hang around them at night and would be checking your car out if you're a lone car in an empty lot. Don't park in house area. Homeowners tend to get paranoid and overprotective of their neighborhood. I've seen people parking near 24 hour businesses like gym, Superwalmart, apartment complexes and such. They tend to try to keep a low profile. One gym I went to daily had a girl living in a Honda Cube. I think she went to the nearby university and you could tell she was dwelling in it when she put up sunshade all around her windows at night.

People don't like to see people living in their car because they think it ghetto-fy their neighborhood. It doesn't help that there are some vehicle dwellers who aren't very good neighbors and dispose their trash and biological waste on the streets and into storm drains.
