I was driving on Santa Monica west toward the promenade tonight. Starting at about 26th street, I noticed that the lights at every intersection had a elaborate camera, sometimes two mounted above it. I was wondering why. Are these just red light cameras? I was kind of creeped out by it..

high tech spy cameras. the cameras have to be mounted up high so the guys watching can have better views down women's shirts.

They might be cameras to sense traffic to control the traffic signals. Or, they might be cameras to record car crashes for evidence gathering purposes.

Santa Monica was the only major city in LA county that didn't ever install red light cameras, so can't be that.

Yep, those! Posted by post of them were giant signs about $500 dollar fines for blocking the intersection during traffic. Maybe it's for that.

I really like SM for the record
