Hello, I have been on these boards over the past couple of months doing a lot of research on Santa Clarita since I have a job offer in Burbank. I have pretty much determined that the SCV is a nice safe place to raise a family. However, in the past couple of days, I have had a few response to my posts that state something a little different. I am about to rent a house up there but, are these statements below true or, are they just haters?

Comments from posters:

"I would probably stay away from Santa Clarita if I were you. There is a huge drug problem there, and the crime rate is a lot higher than what they say. Santa Clarita is known for misleading people with their crime rate to keep the home prices higher."

"... Magic Mountain isn't nick named "Minority Mountain" for no reason. Every time someone goes there you'll hear people say "try not to get stabbed!"

"...Magic Mountain is an extremely dangerous place....don't let you teenage daughters go there alone...it is covered in gang activity"

"...Santa Clarita has a very large gang problem that do one likes to talk about..however, property crime and street crime is pretty high compared to other areas..."

"...keep your kids out of Valencia High because it has a major drug problem..."

LOL, the stuff people fixate on.

California School Performance Maps

^^^^ Anywhere you see large clumps of blue(lightblue to dark blue, 7-10) is a good neighborhood. One or two blues in an area might mean nothing, and just because you see red or yellow does not mean its a bad area(particularly in LAUSD), but theres no bad neighborhood in LA or OC County where all the schools are green or better.

LAWL NO! Santa Clarita is basically WASP-y suburbs. There might be like two areas you might want to stay away from, another user can speak to that. Magic Mountain is completely fine. My old roommates and I had a year pass and never encountered anyone stupid, threatening, or dangerous. If anything, during the summer, there are TOO MANY teenage girls yapping and making the lines miserable. The commute down to Burbank will range from 30 to 40, so not too bad. If you're white, you'll fit in.

Magic Mountain has had issues with gang-activity in the past. Not sure if it is a problem now and I doubt it has anything to do with the town it is in, mostly people coming from the Valley and LA I would imagine.

I went to Magic Mountain back in 1999 and I had no problems. Just guys checking out girls in front of their girls was the only thing I noticed (and that happens everywhere) but nothing too serious.

The Six Flags in New Jersey was rough. People pushing in, lots of thugs and what not. I wouldn't be too quick to go back there. That was 2005.

This dated information...

No wonder the OP is confused.

You'll likely hear negative comments from people about almost any region that isn't predominantly white. The assumption is that 'minority' areas are inherently bad/dangerous. Anywhere else, especially west side or south bay, is utopia because only 'minorities' use drugs, form gangs and commit crime. Think for yourself and consult with people living in the area. And they will be glad to clarify that they are still alive to do so.

People tend to over exaggerate...have any of these people even lived in Santa Clarita?

I view it as being a safe place, a place where people from the Valley move because they are fed up with the valley.

Santa Clarita is a lot different than L.A , more chains less mom and pop places.

Everything looks new. It could be a great place to live if that's what you are looking for.

These statements would be more true:

..."Santa Clarita is dependent on the 5 Freeway, and when it jams, which is frequently, you're SOL."
..."Santa Clarita sits in a ring of wildfire territory and can depend on a big fire almost every year."

Otherwise, poster jm1982 is correct.

Sounds suspiciously like people who are afraid of people who are not white.

Also, if anybody thinks drugs are not problem in pasty white locales, especially the wealthier ones, they're high. (Hint...they can afford the expensive stuff)

Magic Mountain: Anybody really think gangbangers are going to shell out what little cash they have on tickets/concessions/games/stuff at an amusement park just to look menacing? They do that for free, i.e., in parking lots of fast food places.
