Default advice on renting an apt in LA

I'm likely to move from the east coast to the LA area, and I am looking to rent either a 1 BR or a studio apartment in the LA area. I'd like to live within a 25 minute commute to Sylmar. Also, I'd like to live pretty close to either/both the Burbank airport and LAX. I was thinking that the Burbank area may work for me. My top priority is that I should live in a very safe neighborhood. It would be nice to live in an area close to coffee shops/bookstores etc., but that is only secondary. The safety of the location is my main concern. Any suggestions on areas that I should avoid or any information regarding neighborhoods/apartment complexes I should be looking at would be very much appreciated. Also, does anyone know anything about short-term rentals (< 6 months)? Thanks!!

Well Sylmar is located in the San Fernando Valley. Burbank, along with the airport, is also located in the San Fernando Valley. You would have to live near that since LAX is out of the question b/c it is too far.

Since you should live in the San Fernando Valley, let me suggest some areas for you to check out. Studio City, Burbank, and Glendale. Pasadena is my favorite city within LA and that is the area I recommend to everyone that works in the SFV b/c it is the safest area nearby with the least amount of time to commute and the most to do for fun and social life.

Don't live in Sylmar. It is on the northern side of the SFV, which is the bad part. Well, actually, most of the SFV is unsafe except for the southern side along the Santa Monica Mountains. The only exception to that rule in North Hollywood which is unsafe everywhere.

Check out some apartments in Pasadena, South Pasadena especially, Glendale, southern Burbank, southern Studio City, southern Encino, and southern Tarzana. Make sure to stay as far south as your budget can handle.

If you give us a price range, we can suggest some properties for you.

I have to say that most of the San Fernando valley southern section is a safe area. There are also many pockets north that are completely safe.

Safe and Undesirable are two different things. Most of the San Fernando Valley is undesirable yet safe.

Thank you so much for your response! My budget is between $1000 - $1500, it would ne nice to be closer to $1000. I'm looking for studios or 1 BR apts.
