Work Downtown, Live Where?
I'm thinking about leaving NYC for a job in downtown LA (Grand Street), and trying to figure out options as far as areas to live.
Do people actually live downtown? I've heard that it's like NYC's financial district -- but about 5 years ago -- so it's not such a great place to live.
Also, would it be feasible to commute from Santa Monica or Venice or someplace like that? (I'd *love* to live near the beach...) Would that have me looking at an hour on the 10 for a commute? or more than that?

Downtown is actually seeing a bit of a renaissance as a place to live. Areas like South Park, Little Tokyo, and City West have lots of activity right now. You also may want to consider locations which make rail travel to DT available to you. Unfortunately, if you want to live near the beach and work DT, I think you would be looking at some rough commuting.

What is your housing/rental budget?
What are your work hours? Can you stagger or flex your hours (like 6-330)?

Rent would ideally be 1200/month or less (i'm considering sharing/subletting for the summer -- thank god for CraigsList).
I'll have a little bit of flexibility with the hours, but probably not a ton (it's a law firm).

The commute from santa monica to downtown is rough but many do it. Some will tell you its no problem, but its going to be bumper to bumper all the way.
To live near the beach, your minimum is going to be about $1,700 per month+
Whenever I have to be in downtown, it always reminds me how I would never do this everyday.

Tons of people commute from Westside and South Bay beach cities to work downtown every day. It's very normal. You'll just become a part of the horde. There are other great areas to live besides downtown and the beach, however. Fairfax District/The Grove area is full of people from New York, West Hollywood and certain areas of Hollywood are great too. There's also Silverlake and Los Feliz which are closer to downtown and are very popular with East Coast transplants. You should check out all of these neighborhoods before making a decision.

Coming from NYC, Downtown LA, West Hollywood, and generally almost all of West LA will be your best choices. Commuting from the west side isn't really as bad as some may say. But, Downtown LA is now becoming a great place to live and coming from NYC, you will appreciate that DT LA is our main public transportation hub.
Another place to consider is Long Beach. There is a MetroLink public transportation train (similar to a subway train, but above ground) that goes down into Long Beach and heads all the way up into Downtown LA. From there, you can either walk or take a bus, depending on how far your office will be from Union Station. Do you know the address or building you would be in?

The Palms area of Culver City is nice - near Sony Studios (although a lot of traffic). It is just 4 miles from Venice Beach and cheaper rent. Nice neighborhood, good safety and schools.
It is 10 miles West from downtown and your drive should not be more than 30 minutes.

Ive sat on the 10 frwy with concert tickets in hand waiting to just move a 2mph. Sometimes its 10 minutes most of the time its much more. The return (west) is
usually easier but it can still be pretty bad.
