With LA being close in proximity to a desert it has a "desert" element. Is the glass half empty or half full? It is what it is.

And perhaps some overlap out in the far reaches of the LA Area.

What's wrong with being compared to a desert anyway? Deserts are beautiful IMO, and have nice dry weather. Hell Phoenix is my next favorite city after LA!

It's not so much being compared to a desert. It's that people assume LA is a desert. Just like they assume LA is a lot of things that it isn't.

Rain forests are beautiful too. Let's compare LA to a rain forest.

No.. Just no my friend. I HATE extremely hot weather. LA is not a desert thank god. I lived in 29 Palms, been to Arizona, Utah, and Vegas. It's like an uncomfortable blanket of heat covering your whole body and no way to take it off. Pool days? Cool. Other than that, HELLL NO!

Sounds like Florida. You're sweating as soon as you walk out the door.

Default green v. brown

It may be green in L.A. but when I visit from Seattle all I see is brown hills. Well, ok, brown hills and concrete. And roads everywhere. Maybe that's what non-Angelenos are doing; comparing it to what they know. I love visiting, mostly because of the weather. And I love being able to go hiking when it's dry and sunny. And then I come home and it's lush green and grey overcast skies. Blah!

The desert seems to start around Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga/Corona area and gets more pronounced east of San Bernardino. The only desert areas in LA county is north of the mountains around Palmdale and Lancaster.

These areas are all at least an Hour away from LA Downtown in PERFECT traffic..
