Heres the deal.

As I mentioned - I personally think your housing budget is low. $1500 is normally adequate for a one bedroom, but ONLY adequate for MOST of the desirable areas of socal/LA and OC's. Your dog is going to make finding an apt EXTRA hard.

Where are you flying to? transcon? As someone who flies 45 weeks a year, sometimes twice a week, both privately and commercial, this is a huge issue for me - are connections important? What airline do you fly or does your company require you fly? What are your destinations? Can you get away with direct flights out of ONT, BUR, SNA, LGB? or will you need to connect? Or will LAX be your best best? If so, you'll REALLY want to be close to LAX - but as mentioned, $1500 in close enough proximity to LAX is about the low end of the spectrum. If you're only flying out a few weeks a year, you can ignore.

Is your company offering a COL adjustment of you pick LA/CA? If not, I would seriously pick AZ. Then again, I enjoy AZ, and have spent considerable time there. Your money will go much further there, but that is personal advice, and something I personally consider. YMMV.

I don't think you're asking the right questions yet.....

My travel requirements will only be in the western US. Paying more rent is not a problem, my pay will support the COL. I am aware that AZ will take my money farther, just entertaining all possibilities... i know my pet will hinder my apt search....

Western US is still kind of vague. If you're mostly flying to the major western cities Burbank should be fine. I also cover the western US in my job and flew out of the Ontario airport for years (which is similar to Burbank) and it served me fine (I now fly out of LAX.) Your money will definitely go farther around Pasadena, Hollywood, Los Feliz etc. I would also suggest looking at El Segundo, Redondo Beach and Torrance. I would start browsing West Side Rentals to get a feel for rents in these areas and pet policies. A larger dog is going to significantly complicate the apartment search. It's kind of a running joke around here that people want cheap apartments on the beach that will take their two beloved Great Danes.

Yeah - dude - can you help us help you?

What airport do you need to be close to? How often will you need to be traveling? daily? weekly? monthly? quarterly? What airline? what destinations?

Traveling around LA sucks - living close to the airport is an absolute requirement if you're traveling frequently, IMO.

Long story short I want to live in a warmer climate and it would be easier to manage work being the right time zone instead of staying in the Central...

Wishlist
-close to airport
- good night life
- shops
- restaurants
-near a beach a plus
- vibrant area

rent $1400 - but cheaper would be nice. Any areas for consideration please let me know. I would like to entertain every idea.

Places I've considered - San Diego, Phx AZ, Tempe AZ, Scottsdale AZ.
Manhattan/Hermosa Beach. West of PCH. That's for L.A. San Diego city beach communities could also work, as could Newport and Huntington Beaches. Those are the best options matching your somewhat vague criteria.
