South LA is indistinguishable from Mexico. Last time I drove down there, I was in shock. Never in California have I driven down a main street so filthy. There were full-sized pitbulls roaming the street with no collar (or owner probably). Last time I went there, my girlfriend didn't even want to step out of the car because there was dog feces everywhere. The commercial streets are endless stucco boxes with most signage written in Spanish. Plenty of potholes in the streets.

A huge portion of LA is third-worldly.

The potholes are all over the city, not just south LA. But outside of some parts of Watts I don't find South LA to be excessively dirty, especially considering how poor it is. Where were you?

If you don't want to be in a city with a lot of American descendants of Mexican immigrants, and Mexican immigrants, LA is probably the wrong city for you. Always has been. It would be like wanting to live in New York but not deal with Jews or Italians.

Honestly it does resemble parts of Mexico. The biggest difference when I was in Tijuana compared to here, was that most of the houses over there don't have front yards, and theres shanty towns on the outskirts of Tijuana. But Mexican architecture does have some influence in the architecture of Los Angeles. Especially in East LA.

The City of LA is too large of its own good--parts of South LA, MacArthur Park, and Pacoima look 3rd worldly because the City of LA doesn't have the money and resource to maintain all of its territories.

Many smaller local cities with a large Latino population like Downey, Montebello, and El Monte are much better off in terms of livability because they have enough resource to police the streets and enforce codes.
