San Antonio by far has the best Mexican food in the USA, its sister city of Monterrey is just a three hour drive.

I lived in CA and TX....CA mexican food emphasizes vegetables more and thinner steak. TX mex food is all about thick fajita meat and cheese. I'm not saying which is better, they are very different though. I prefer CA mex food because I like more than just a plate full of meat with cheese smothered all over it. But, if you are into cheese and meat and clogged arteries I guess you might prefer tex mex!

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!!!!, cause if you do, you'll have to hear them talk about why you shouldn't.

The Mexican food in Texas varies by city (all of which have very different identities from one another). In San Antonio it's pretty good. In Austin it's bad to average. I've only spent a week in LA, but in that short time I had two Mexican meals that were way better than anything I've had in two years in Austin. As a matter of fact, I've had much better Mexican food on the heavily Hispanic Eastern Avenue corridor in Baltimore than I have in Austin. Like someone said, lots of cheese & meat, and the spiciness isn't very nuanced.
Then again, I think Texas' much vaunted barbecue is incredibly overrated. I'll take NC or TN style any day -- tastier and more tender. Maybe I just don't get the TX palate.

Wow, this is really interesting. Thicker cuts of meat, more queso, and as stated earlier, much more chiles...

The Eastern Avenue corridor is full of people who have emigrated from Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico just in the last ten years. That area's undergoing kind of a renaissance, and there are a lot of really great restaurants there.
Outside of that, Baltimore actually has a number of very good restaurants (but visitors won't find them around the Inner Harbor).
