San Antonio has the best Mexican food hands down. Three types of iconic food started in San Antonio:

Chili
Fajitas
Fritos

San Antonio seems to be the recurring theme in this thread.

But I guess I should've titled the post Mexican-American food, since Texas chili and queso, San Francisco burritos, and San Diego fish tacos aren't exactly authentic south of the border.

Authentic or not, those Mission burritos are still damn good, though. Arguably the best in the country!

Tex-Mex doesn't have Chili Colorado and Chili Verde or Chile Relleno or Tamales. There is only Tex Mex here in Ma. and I don't even bother unless I want a generic salad. Lived in Bakersfield for a few months before moving here and tried to have my fill of good Mexican food before leaving.

I have no idea what Chili Colorado or Chili Verde are, but certainly there are Chile Rellenos and tamales in Tex-Mex restaurants. I don't know why you think you would find authentic Tex-Mex in MA.

Never said I did. Just trying to convey that I have experienced both and that there is a big difference. If you lived in California and liked Mexican food you would know what those foods are.

Tito's Tacos
El Burrito Jr.
Any Pupusa Place and Taco Trucks

Most gringos don't know about the L.A. taco trucks, I'm an exception. Not the ones who serve both American and Mexican food. BOMB TACOS!

Well...being of Mexican decent I LOVE tex-mex... that being said ITS NOT AUTHENTIC, and California...hahaha probably worse off then Tex-Mex the most authentic Mexican food with us influences if probably New Mexican-Mexican.
California has more Baja influence, and Texas has more northern Mexico influence. baja tends to have more sea food, but Northern Mexican love their meat... Tex Mex over does it though..too much meat.
Dallas and Houston are famous for their Mexican restaurants. Dallas, city proper, is primarily Mexican. one good restaurant is called Mi Cocina. I have never heard a complaint about their food, maybe their prices a little, but never their food. I'm sure LA has some really good Mexican restaurants that I've never heard of. i mean I went to LA this summer, but I mean Texas is more famous for its Mexican food, that goes without question.
many people would compare Cali-Mexican to Tex-mex like people compare Dallas to LA. I personally do like Tex-Mex better, and I really do like Sea food, but baja food is overrated.
I'm Mexican, can speak Spanish fluently, been to Mexico and can tell you tex-mex is not authentic. If you want Authentic you need to go to El Paso(which is Ironically near New mexico... Cough cough).
Texas is receiving more illegals then California and has a longer borderline with Mexico then any other state. perhaps this allows more Mexican influence then Texas. Texas is a really good food state. We have our BBQ, Tex-Mex, Cajun is east Texas, and some nice sea food from the gulf. But, Being half Chinese too. I can safely say that California Asian food is overall better... or at least the Chinese is. The pho Joints in DFW and Houston can compete with Ya'll's.
DFW has some really good Indian food, I'm not sure about LA, cause i don't say 'you know i really need to go to Los Angeles to see if i can find some really good Indian food' to myself. California has better everything else though...except me... I can make Chinese food better then any other Lousy Californian .
but remember comparing Cali-Mex to Tex-Mex is like comparing BBQ to Seafood... there is no comparison. Sea food is obviously better!!!!...jk...what the point is is that they're 2 different cuisines and there is no ground to compare then under.

Proof positive of my above post.

Food just tastes better here! I just had Los Muchachos on Saturday, and I'm a happy guy.
