I lived in Compton till 1956 and I don't remember any black people there. We had a hispanic family on our block, N. Rose Ave. but it was very white in those days. However my family moved north to Ventura County when I was in 2nd grade so my world consisted of just a few blocks between Rosecrans, Santa Fe and I think Alameda. I have great memories of Compton. We used to ride our bikes to the plunge, downtown Compton and to a park over on Santa Fe.....it was a wonderful world....

Tiny Town in Compton
I used to go to Tiny Town and it was a thrill. It was located on the corner of Alondra and Long Beach Blvd. on the southwest corner. There was a Cole's market there. Kids from Roosevelt Jr. High would hang out there in later years. Later, we would go to Shady Acres which wasn't far from there. It was actually in North Long Beach.

Tiny Town
I remember both Tiny Town and Shady Acres. My sisters is class of 60 and she used to go to Roosevelt Jr. Hi. Does anyone remember the outdoor skating rink? I think it was on Alameda, but I could be all wrong. It was across the street from a vacant lot that also had a big building on it that we used to refer to as the Rock Crusher. We weren't allowed over there, but did sneak over and look in from time to time....

Didn't George and Barbara Bush live in South Central right after he finished college. My understanding is that the region was pretty middle class for some time.

Compton 1959 Year Book
Very much interested as to where you found your copy of the year book.
Would love to have a copy, or at the very least copies of some of the photos. I attended Compton Senior High.

I know this, I'm a window washer and I did a nice one story home in Whittler right off Whittier Bvd and Colima Rd. Well the owners and I got to talking and they told me that George Bush lived in there home for a while as he was dealing with oil projects in the SoCal area. This was long before they bought it of course.
Hmm, he even left books at the house that they still have, it was a large volume of books that if you read them all its equivalent of getting a full degree at Yale or any one of those preppy schools.
lol, they told me not to tell anybody because if the city finds out there home would be declared historical which they did not want for some reason.

I was only about three years old when we lived in Compton, but I do remember how mean the other kids were. One little boy was kicking a much smaller boy to steal his bike and I ran out and started hitting the little bugger until the neighbor dads came out. There were a few white families there in the early 50's but it was already a rough neighborhood. We were a few blocks from the Watts shopping center. I'll have to ask my brother if he remembers anything

We lived just off Rosecrans...before they put up the fences. 1953-ish. They used to have a parade every now and then. Kind of fun.

A few years ago, my mother tried to find the old family house. A few blocks away, the local police stopped her and asked why a white woman was wanting to drive through Compton. She explained that she used to live there in the 50's. He informed her it wasn't safe for her to go any further and she turned around. That's sad. She lives in San Diego now. I still worry about her though.
