This is the bs our media lets govt and private officials, VP's, Managers, and the like get away with. Its the medias job to ask questions like that and in that manner, humiliating the subject if necessary.

Anyway, I ride an average of 6-8 times a month and know the answer already. Its ~ half the riders do not pay fare. At least thats what I observe.
You also have to factor in some who bypass the ticket machines have monthly pases or already purchased an all day pass.

Or those who are in a hurry and tapping the card would mean missing the train. So many factors here.

I don't recall ever taking free rides on MTA. I believe it's gotten more complicated now.

I don't see how locking the turnstiles will change anything. People can still hop over the bar or easily walk through the access gate for disabled people.

Does locking the turnstiles just mean that the Sheriffs won't be riding the trains anymore checking people's tickets?
