Hello all. I moved here about 6 years ago from the East coast to be under the same roof as my wife...we had been married 3 year while living across the country from each other. The plan was for us to move to the Dallas-Fortworth, Tx area to buy a house....at least, that was my plan. To make a long story short, I will be leaving her and getting a divorce. The only reason I haven't left yet is because I don't make a lot of money (I'm an independent contractor in the IT field) and don't want to pay $1000+ for a little ass apartment! Also, right now, my income isn't steady and I have to go back to a steady 9-5 to be sure of consistent income to make absolutely sure I will be able to pay my rent and other bills on time. I've been independent and paying my way since I was a teenager and now at 60 years old, this is the first time I have to live with a woman that I can't stand to be around!

Back East (Baltimore, Md.) I always had luck in finding a private owner who did not want to advertise that had a nice apartment to rent. My plan (when I'm financially ready) is to go around in some good neighborhoods and just knock on doors, tell my story, and pray to find a one bedroom apartment that will allow my two cats and a good tenent for $600 - $700 a month. Is this possible, or just a "pipe dream"? I'd like to stay on the west side of town (now live in Mid-city, about 10 minutes from Hollywood, 20 mins. from the ocean).

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

It might be possible...but you gotta wonder why someone would rent under market rent.

I think you could probably rent a private room in a nice area for 600-700 mo ,but you said you are looking for a 1 bedroom apartment.

In all honesty I don't see 600-700 for a 1bedroom being realistic in a decent area.

Property prices are much higher in L.A versus cities like Baltimore., Easily twice as much and probably more like 3 or 4x as much...so it just doesn't seem to make sense one would be able to rent for the same price in L.A as Baltimore.

You could also try posting on craigslist under housing wanted. I've seen people post similar stories , but I think it would be hard to find someone to charge an undermarket rent unless you are providing other services, like running errands, housekeeping , cooking, etc

There are a lot of people looking for reduced rent in exchange for services like this.

The two cats are the deal killer.

Answer is no, it's not possible.

Good luck. This is a much bigger and more expensive city.

Even without two cats though I think it would next to impossible to find a 1bedroom apartment in a decent area for $600-700

If you don't want to pay $1000 for a little ass apartment...L.A probably isn't the best place for you.

This is a big question everyone that lives here has to ask...is it worth it/ can I afford it.

It's a big part of why I am considering moving ...price isn't the ONLY reason.

Strongly recommend you look into a roommate situation. Split a 2-bedroom and you will come closer to your goal.

I'd probably prefer a private room in a house versus a roommate situation , preferably with a private entrance...but everyone is different. You should easily be able to do that or the split a 2bedroom idea in your price range.

Seems there would be a lot more privacy in a house ,especially with a private entrance...I guess I could be wrong though.

I'm not sure, they sound like the same thing to me. I have an apartment with a private entrance, but it's also a roommate situation.
