Hi everyone,
I'm a 22 year old, currently living in Sherman Oaks(Dickens street to be particular) for about 6 month. I'm seriously thinking about moving out of the valley. Although, The apartment I'm staying at is super nice and the area is safe and somewhat walkable, I feel like I'm missing out a lot living in the valley, it's so boring and soulless, plus it's kinda ghetto.

I decided I should move to the Westside, either Santa Monica(between Colorado and Montana av) or Westwood(around westwood village) just because of how walkable and lively they are. But each got it's own attractions, Santa Monica, I got to live next to the beach. While in westwood there are more people that are around my age, thanks to UCLA.

I would like to know which one do you prefer, and why ? I will start looking for 2 bedroom apts there in the coming weeks, are there any particular streets to keep my eye on ? my budget is around $3500.

Are you going to actually be working on the Westside? Because that would play a big part of things. But unless you're going to be attending UCLA, I'd recommend Santa Monica.

I live in Westwood and love it, but you might feel closed out of the scene there if you're not a college student. Santa Monica has a better scene for younger working folks. Both are walkable and lively. But based on the information you've given us, I think SM would be more up your alley.

I hate all the ethnic signs on Westwood Blvd. these days -- makes me feel like I took a wrong turn and ended up in Tehran. On the other hand, I love Montana Ave. in SM, though if you're in your early 20's it may be too low key for your taste.

I'm doing nothing really, not working or studying. But, I might take some college classes sometime in the future, though(doubt it'll be in UCLA)

3500? You can afford a luxury 2 br apartment near downtown Santa Monica (third street promenade). That would be your best bet.

Westwood would be very boring for you then. Go to Santa Monica.

Can you guys elaborate on why Westwood would be boring if I'm not going to UCLA ?

Well not just that you don't go to UCLA, but that you don't work at all. Without questioning how you can even afford a place in that price range without holding down a job, Westwood Village is just a big shopping center with restaurants and a few bars. I love it, but you would get bored very quickly.

In other words, Santa Monica has more for you.

Westwood is ok, but if you are expecting the fun college life of UCLA students, it isnt there. Santa Monica nearer to the coast like 3rd street or main street is best to live. I use to rent near 26th/Wilshire/SMB and it is boring in east Santa Monica.
