Wondering what everyone thinks are the best neighborhoods for bicycle commuters or people who just like do cycle recreationally? Which areas have the best bike lanes, safest for cyclists, etc?

I don't think most of L.A. is totally bicycling friendly but some areas certainly are more than others. checking the map like VLWH suggested will give you a start. When you mentioned bicycle commuting I thought you were talking from your home to work. That is not Los Angeles, it appears, you are just talking bike trails, and bike riding overall, right?

Terrain is also a part of bike friendliness.

If you live up in the hills (for example, Mt Washington or Hollywood Hills), you may have trouble getting the bike back home without walking and pushing.

That may kill the whole notion of bike commuting for a lot of people.

West of the 405 seems to have the most bike lanes and paths and I think it gets gradually worse as you go east towards downtown. For commutning I'd say anywhere from Santa Monica down to Redondo Beach would make an ideal commute since you can take the beach path most of the way. From Marina Del Ray south to Redondo Beach it's pretty much a straight shot on an uninterrupted bike path.

The beach area is the best for cyclists without a doubt.

Santa Monica is taking great lengths to install new bike lanes all the time. Biking in the area I notice people are most accepting of me whereas biking in other areas I can feel the disdain.

As an example, in SM cars will go wide around me if I am in the slow lane riding along the parked cars. whereas in other areas I feel cars get way too close to me in the same situation. I know I can legally use the slow lane if it gets too narrow between there and the curb, but I prefer not to do that and find the Westside drivers handle it better.
