Default LA lifestyle

is their a such thing for a safe ethnic neighborhood anymore in LA (black, latino, asian)?

i recently just got back from LA and i liked it.

i liked alot of west LA neighborhoods but wasnt their long enough to really observe how they are

what neighborhoods are best known for down to earth people? (if that even exists in LA)

i would like to be close to the nightclubs, the beach, shopping (rodeo dr and bev center are the best) nice restaraunts and an area where students or young professionals live preferably in a safe mixed neighborhood.

Rodeo Dr and Beverly Center are the best? What type of mixed neighborhood are you talking about? Those are very expensive areas. You aren't going to get diversity there.

Black, Latino - NO, you will usually have gang activity, poor schools, dirty streets and lots of crime. Asian - Yes, in Monterey Park where its primarily Chinese. Safe area but no where close to beach or clubs.

What exactly do you mean by "down to earth people?" Do you mean "green" people with hybrids who practice yoga, bellydancing, zazen, and tai chi?

As far as neighborhoods with students, young professional and a mixed crowd is concerned there really isnt any as they are all spread out over all the areas in LA. A couple of areas that are "mixed" (i.e., diverse) that I particularly like are Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Burbank. You wont find a great deal of "college" folks in these areas but you will find more "I wannabe in the entertainment business" types and the "I moved here from (insert midwestern city name here) to pursue my dream".

Monterey Park and other San Gabriel Valley is not as exciting as the West Side. A little boring for a young person. But Old Town Pasadena has more action. Fun place. down to earth

I think the poster was referring to shopping.

Westchester is mostly white, but in certain areas of it it's mixed. Also, with Loyola Marymount University nearby, there is a high number of college students, but not much fun stuff do nearby. The neighboring city of Playa del Rey is similar. Torrance is mostly single family homes, but there are quite a bit of Asians living in the upscale neighborhoods.

It may seem like Angelenos are racist when we say that pretty much every Black or Hispanic neighborhood isn't very good, but it's just facts. The best one that I can think of is either San Pedro, Fullerton, Anaheim, or certain parts of North Hollywood.

As a black male, I would say the best neighborhoods for diversity is Westchester, parts Venice, West L.A. district, Westwood, and Palms. I would hope to move there once I got fully initiated in my future trade.

I don't know where you're from but I'm from Chicago, and it's very segregated there so you have a bigger pick of areas as far as "Ethnic" areas go. However, since I've moved to LA, its more about picking an area thats safe and affordable. The thing about LA is that there's not really a lot of ethnic neighborhoods, sure you have your Chinatown etc. but not really. Since you didn't say what ethinicity you're looking for I can just say that if you want to live in a predominately black neighborhood you can try the fox hills/baldwin hills areas. But they're spotty, just like most. Focus on finding a safe area and then drive to the places you want to go. That way you'll get stuck in traffic just like everyone else here

Also, I will say this and I'm just being truthful. Stay away from Latino areas if you are black. As mentioned earlier, if you choose an area based on the ethnicity of it's inhabitants most likely that will be a lower income area ( that's across the board), if you choose an area like this and its Latino, as a black person you will have some problems. I just read this on the news (get my news on line). Like I said, look for an area that's safe and affordable.
