There's definitely a lot of that in L.A.

I don't know what your stance on science-based or evidence-based thinking is (which does not always go hand-in-hand with atheism), but LA has some serious drawbacks in that department. Many, MANY people here are anti-science, and they don't even know it because they haven't the comprehension. Like, they cannot wrap their minds around the scientific method and can't understand the difference between anecdote and evidence.

You will run into loads of extremest, left-wing variety anti science here: anti-vaccine people; people against GM foods because they don't understand genetics; people who believe that jet vapor is "chemical trails" sprayed by the government; people who believe "natural" and "organic" mean "better for you"; people who believe "organic" means no pesticides; people who don't understand homogenization; people who don't understand germ theory or herd immunity; people who profess atheism, yet consult astrologists (one of my faves); people on very unhealthy diets, like Paleodiet or Veganism; people who believe Western medicine is "bad"; people who believe drinking lemon juice for a week will cure cancer; people who don't understand why scientists test on animals; people who actually have BOMBED scientists cars; people who don't understand a LOT of things that have to do with science, and don't care to understand because "they just know" or "they can FEEL it", etc...

Feelings and anecdotes trump facts here.

So, if science in particular is very dear to you, you may wish to check out the more logic-minded cities of the Northeast. That said, there ARE some pockets of science-based folks around Los Angeles. But I have to say, most of my friends here are not rational thinkers, even if they may be atheists or agnostics. I've had to learn to "live and let live", and avoid subjects that have to do with science. It's not unlike visiting the South, actually, just the complete opposte end of the extremist spectrum.
this is sooooooooo true. i am from the south, and i am also an artist who has loads of friends into one sort of occult/new age scene or another. whether it be channeling or crystals or tarot (i have a friend who makes her sole living from reading tarot cards) that stuff is really thick on the ground here. of course, its LA, you expect that, but i am the sort of person who, while i believe in alot of stuff that has not been empirically proven, i am also an engineering student who geeks out on physics and math and multiverses. and i do find that its the other side of the coin in terms of extremism. it can get really hippy-dippy up in here.

however, you can always go hang out at Cal Tech. Pasadena has loads of scientifically minded weirdos.
