Default Silverlake/Echo Park/Los Feliz? Which one!!?!?

I just moved in with my brother in Newport Beach and don't like the commute to LA for school. I'm from Chicago's Wicker Park area (yes, the one they made the movie about) and I'm into the indie rock/dive bar/art scene, and would like to know which is the best for that. Keep in mind I'll be frugal (ok, I'll admit it, CHEAP) and I'll be looking into moving with people as opposed to getting my own place and chip in a max of $700 for a room (yep, I know that's cheap, but it's what I'll have to spend since I won't have a job for a little while). I'd also like to be able to bike to a lot of places as well. Hills are not a problem, just better exercise for me.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and would I need to have a separate drivers license for a 50 cc moped(with pedals)? In Chicago, all you needed was your regular driver's license and I'm clueless as to how it is here. Thanks guys

I think for any type of motorcycle you will need a motorcycle liscense.

Talk to Sorcerer68. He lives in one of those and can tell you about them.

I would choose Echo park since it's nice and not as expensive as Los Feliz. You would also find people who are into indie rock, dive bars and theres plenty of art in Echo park. If you're looking into moving in with people, say two more individuals, your split rent should not be more than 500 dollars a month. Also, Echo park is very close to downtown and you could ride your bike to Hollywood or Downtown with ease.

I think you do need a separate lic for a moped.
Those cities are all the same to me, with Echo being the cheapest. Is there anyway you can get a job first? That would be your best bet, commute time/distance is important.
Your job could be anywhere. What field are you in? I temped for a while and all my jobs were on Ventura Blvd in the Valley.

You know what? A guy from a car dealership who rides a motorcycle told me that if it's under 50cc, It's legal. I'll definitely need to check with the DMV. I have no job right now and I'm in school full time.. That's why I'm really limited to something cheap.

Echo Park has a nice little lake park and the Echoplex club right there (it's part of the historic old Aimee Semple McPherson Angeles Temple complex) which is a fantastic, large-ish club, but I would really, really, really, really, really take a good look around the area in person before moving there. It's cheap for a reason. Good luck.

You will need an M1 license for a motorcycle. You'll need to take the written motocycle test and a driving test. If you were to take a certified motorcycle riding course you would not have to take the DMVs driving test, only the written.

Not all of Echo Park is like the area right by the park itself. There's nothing wrong with most of Echo Park (particularly north of Sunset). And even the "bad" part of Echo Park has improved over the last few years. The area does offer some of the best value for money in L.A. Don't let the brown and yellow folks scare you, most of them are good people and won't hurt you (and the numbers of those who will are in decline).

Now, there are STREETS in Echo Park I wouldn't recommend, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the neighborhood as a whole. The key is to check out the street itself, as Echo Park can vary greatly depending on the particular street. Most areas are good but as stated above there are some that aren't even though the ones that aren't have certainly seen worse days than the present.
