Do something substantial, go to the beach- it's right there! You go up the 405 and get as far as Santa Monica Blvd., then you'll have to turn around- only to miss your flight on the way back.

I wouldn't try to visit Santa Monica or Venice during late afternoon/early evening because of the traffic. Go south to Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach instead.

I agree with the above post. I didnt realize you mentioned afternoon to evening. I would say manhattan beach pier and dinner, drinks. There are about 5 bars within 2 blocks of the pier and several places for dinner.

It will be during the afternoon/early evening. All suggestions welcomed!!!!
I can't think of anywhere safe in the LAX area. If you want to have a few drinks you would be allot better off to stay at the air port, Their bars their they cost more but you will leave alive,

Oh come on, it is not bad especially in these tourist areas. The three or four places (Venice, Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, and the two beach towns south of LAX) suggested for this guy aren't bad. They are touristy, populated, and patrolled. There is a lot of pressure by local merchants to keep these places reputable. He isn't traveling east to Inglewood or worse.

His biggest fear should be missing his plane.

Oh please.. Stop telling tales about there not being any safe places around LAX..The biggest horror will be dealing with LAX's security.

It took me 2 hours one time.

They've gotten better at it, though.

Not that bad at all. Depends on the airline and the day of the week. friday evening is going to be busy, but mid week isnt bad at all. Southwest always looks like its a mess though.

If you decide to go down to manhattan beach pier area, a taxi will take 10-15minutes and there are plenty of taxis for the return trip as well. You will be coming and going from the back side of the airport so you avoid mostly all of the commuter traffic.
