I am moving to the Los Angeles area to work in Burbank. I know nothing about the area. I'm young (early 20s) but not a huge partier. That said, I would like to have access to cultural outlets (concerts, etc.) and I do not want an impossible commute. I plan on renting. Where is a nice place to live? I also don't want to pay an arm and a leg.

Live in Burbank. If you want to go out for a night on the town, Hollywood is not far away.

I'd also recommend living in Burbank. It's a safe area and the city services are separate from L.A which must be nice. I imagine they are more responsive when dealing with issues versus L.A

Hollywood is very close too as yby1 said. There are also lot's of retail and restaurant options in Burbank and parking is free almost everywhere.

If Burbank isn't possible, Glendale, Pasadena, La Crescenta are all generally fine.

Closer to NoHo arts is nice. Being walking distance to the subway would be very beneficial in my opinion.

I agree with everyone else who said live in Burbank. You will appreciate all that extra time a short commute gives you. I've been here for almost two years and I love it (I've also lived in Culver City and NoHo). When I lived in the NoHo Arts district I thought it would be great to be so close to shops and bars and such, but I ended up just as likely to drive to another part of town to go out.

When I moved I actually found rent to be cheaper in Burbank than in the trendy parts of NoHo (rent can be cheaper in northern North Hollywood, but it's a more run down area). It's easy to get to plenty of places with great restaurants/bars/unique stores on weekend mornings/evenings or late on weeknights. When you need to get basics like groceries and toilet paper, it's really nice to be able to go to the store and utilize ample free parking. I never thought I'd be rah-rah giant free parking lots, but oh man, fighting for a spot in a tiny parking lot or circling around the block to find a street parking spot at home after a long day of work no longer holds any appeal.

People may knock SuBurbank, but I love it. I think the "bad" parts of Burbank are a lot nicer than rough parts of LA proper - you can't go too wrong within the city limits. Glendale would also be a good option if you want to broaden your apartment search.

Good post. I'm actually a big proponent of living in Burbank. It's a rarity in LA county. It's nice, safe, spacious, small town feel, cleaner, cheap, AND close to hotspot areas like Hollywood and Downtown. It's Koreatown prices at a far better environment.
