I'm in West Athens. Having spent most of my life sheltered on the Westside , I'm not as familiar with this area (Yes, I know there is crime, no need to tell me that). If you know with the area, tell me more. Is there any good little hole in the wall restaurants or carnicerias? Any place I should avoid at all costs? I see that there is a farmer's market in Athens Park on Wednesday mornings, is it really pathetic? I would like to support the immediate area as much as possible.

South L.A. is another part of Los Angeles that is subject to perception and opinion, outside of what accurate testimony you might acquire from this site from actual residents. Meanwhile, your request appears pretty generic. So to start, here is some generic but reasonably current information about the area: Historic South-Central Profile - Mapping L.A. - Los Angeles Times

Not looking so much for stats, but pedestrian opinion from people more familiar with the area than I. We purchased a house here, so I've combed over those stats religiously. Now that I've settled in, I'm ready to cautiously explore the area. If there is a good taco stand in the area, I'd like to try it out. I'd like to focus on the area near the 105 and 110 freeways. I know Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena fairly well, but not this part of LA/LA County.

hello yby1..i can tell you that there is a Ralph's on Vermont/120th. there is Jim Dandy fried chicken and Louisiana fried chicken on Vermont/Imperial. i don't know of any taco trucks though. i can tell you that the best taco truck is on LaBrea/Venice in mid-city. i don't know if you would want to go that far,but that is as much as i know about the area.

Is that Ralph's nice inside? The area surrounding it seems sketchy, but the Ralph's looks okay. It looks like they just remodeled it.

La Brea and Venice is not too far. Thanks I pass by Tacos David on 120th and Vermont all the time and it smells really good. I'll have to try it soon.

I need to try Birrieria Jalisco in Lynwood.

yes,the ralph's is nice and remodeled. i know that area is not the best, but during the day it is fine. if you don't have a car,the metro buses stop right in front of the ralph's and the chicken places.

You are going to "explore" the area? If you get asked "where are you from," you better be prepared. it's best that you stay inside or move back to where you moved from. Youre a white guy trying to start gentrification foolishly?

Interesting I never heard about the area of West Athens before.

Have you tried to put your address into yelp and see what comes up?

The restaurants that come up seem to be in Gardena.

I know I saw mention of the someone on the board that was buying a house in West Athens, but not sure if it was you.

I don't have details about businesses in that particular section of South Los Angeles. But as an Afro American native since 1958, I might be aware that even the hardest of gangstas are not packs of raving savages waiting to pounce on the first white person that appears. Log off here, turn off the TV and head down there and amaze yourself at how you are able to leave unharmed.

Lol. I'm not a white guy.

It's pretty normal here, and not a war zone. Yes, there is crime, but it looks like pretty easily avoided for the most part.
