and La Canada unified is #2.

SMUSD Is Tops In State for Eleventh Consecutive Year, According to API | The San Marino Tribune

And yet Pasadena Unified blows and the area has the most private schools of any school district its size. A very strange phenomenon.

No surprise, both areas are very nice and have highly educated professional residents.

The 2013 top scoring unified school districts in California include: San Marino, with an API of 953; La Cañada, with 947; Manhattan Beach, 935; Piedmont, with an API of 933, Palo Alto at 932 and Arcadia, with an API of 929.
There are some very, very strong school districts in the Bay Area (e.g. Pleasanton, Dublin, Palo Alto, Piedmont), and LA County was able to get a few in up at the top. Awesome.

Yeah, South Pas and Arcadia were also up there with APIs over 920.

I think most of us know a school district rating is usually based on economics and the overall family education levels. The more educated the parents, the better the school districts will be rated. San Marino and La Canada have always been near the top, along with Arcadia and So. Pasadena. That is why, back in the early 70s we moved from Pasadena to Arcadia. It is surprising about Pasadena. Regardless of the number of private schools, let's face it, there are a lot of areas in Pasadena/Altadena that are not terribly desirable.

I agree with you about there being some undesirable areas in Altadena & Pasadena, however, here are some interesting numbers.

Median Household Income (2010 ACS)

Pasadena: 67,920
Altadena: 84,413
Sierra Madre: 84,487
Arcadia: 77,221

Altadena really has no choice but to either stay with PUSD or create its own school district (which has come up in the past) because geographically there's really no other alternative. What surprises me is why Sierra Madre stays a part of PUSD instead of trying to join Arcadia. Both municipalities' income levels are above Pasadena's and it is right on the border of the most desirable area of Arcadia.

I don't see what's strange about it. The greater number of parents who believe a school district is bad and put their children in private schools, the further that school district declines.

I had a friend who moved from Texas to Pasadena. She found that Pasadena had more private schools per square mile than any other city in the U.S. I have no proof of this of course, but having grown up in the Pasadena area, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I wonder if it will ever happen? I loved living Altadena, we had an old, Spanish style home on New York drive, we sold it and moved to a basic burb home 1/2 the size and missing the pool in Arcadia just to get our kids out of the school district. No, I am not going to say I am sorry and it was years ago, but to this day our kids still talk about that house. We also went to church in Sierra Madre, one of the most charming towns in So California in my opinion.

New York has many beautiful homes on it, especially between Lake & Hill.
