Currently I live on Sunset Blvd. & Larrabee Street in West Hollywood. I pay 1450/mo and that includes ALL utilities (yes, electricity as well), underground garage, pool, gym, and bbq area.

My new job is going to be on Wilshire and Granville Ave.

I want to move as close to it as possible but I don't want to pay more than what I pay right now or maybe I could make a sacrifice and go up to like 1,700ish. As for a salary of 100k/yr, what would you say my max rent should be?

What areas would you guys recommend for me? The closer to work the better but I don't want to live TOO close to the highway, though -- I'd rather be on the Santa Monica side.

I'd recommend Santa Monica, Brentwood, and Westwood. The area in Westwood between Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd is generally older, more professional. However, there still are a lot of apartments jammed with UCLA undergrads.

I don't think you'll find much for 1450, maybe studios. You should be able to find a 1 BR for 1700. You're making $100k/year you can easily afford it.

I'm going to be moving to Brentwood in a couple of days. I work in Century City, so am worried about crossing the 405 everyday. My coworkers who live west of 405 say it isn't so bad though.

The higher your budget the better. If you want to live right by work, the West LA/Sawtelle area is cheaper than neighboring Brentwood, Westwood, and Santa Monica. You can easily get a nice one bedroom for 1700, maybe something for 1450 too. By "West LA" I mean from about Bundy Dr to the west, the 405 to the east, Santa Monica Blvd to the north and Pico Blvd to the south.

The locations are only 6 1/2 miles apart. Is it really worth it to move when you're in a good apartment situation?

Do what I used to do when I was a young renter. Driver around. See those places that look nice and are close to your work? Try to live there. Go talk to management if they have them onsite, you don't have to wait for something to pop up on CL or whatever.

Rent a small studio for as cheap as you can as close as you're able to to your work. Take public transit and get rid of your insurance for a good while. Why throw all that money away on a fancy place and insurance when you can endure a year or so of inconvenience and humble living and save a fortune of money!

Be wise. A year of minor sacrifice will benefit you greatly in the long run.
