Hey,

I just took a job in Torrance, CA.

I'm moving up from San Diego.

I'm not sure where to live at all.

I'll be making about $65k/yr.

I have zero car payments and zero debt.

I suppose ideally I'd like to pay around $1300.

I want to live in a fairly safe place.

I'm in my late 20s.

Hmmm what else would someone need to know?

LA tends to be a bit overwhelming when searching.

I'd prefer something with a garage so I can wrench on my vehicle.

Thanks for all the help!

Do you want to live on your own or is having a roommate ok? What do you enjoy in your free time? Do you need to be close to the water or is living inland ok?

Given that you're working in Torrance, I would imagine you don't want to spend hours and hours sitting in traffic each day so I think you would want to live in the south bay cities (manhattan beach, hermosa beach, redondo beach).

I prefer to live alone. I like a number of things, like hiking, diving, cycling, and general outdoors stuff. I don't care that much about a really great nightlife, because if I want to do that I'll generally go take a drive and I don't go out even once a week most of the time.

I don't NEED to be close to water.

I'd like to ideally avoid hours in traffic everyday :-)

See, if your company doesn't allow you to work remotely and you have to be in by a certain time everyday, your choices are definitely going to be contrained. LA county has lots of nice little cities, but the set of choices available to any person is usually more limited because of their work location/situation.

So yeah, I think the beach cities would be good for you. I don't think you'll be able to get a place all to yourself right by the water for $1300 (but as you said that's fine with you), but maybe a bit inland and maybe in Redondo Beach your money will go farther.

You can get your fill of hiking etc on the weekends, LA is great for it. Lots of nice trails in the Santa Monica mountains, the Hollywood Hills, Griffith Park and so on.

I'll definitely be checking out Redondo Beach then.

I've also seen a few things down in San Pedro. Is that a bad area?

Not familiar enough with San Pedro to comment abt the safety of that area, but I would want to avoid the drive from there to Torrance every morning and back in rush hour traffic.

One thing about LA is you really don't want to live far from work. So keep that in mind.

What is considered far, because Long Beach is only about 11 miles from work according to Google Maps.

Depending on when you're driving, 11 miles can be absolutely murder.

San Pedro wouldn't be too bad of a drive to Torrance, but when I was looking a few months ago I couldn't find anything in San Pedro that I liked.

Why not Torrance? I live in Torrance & work in Carson, and it's great, a fifteen minute drive to and from work at worst...

Torrance has anything I'd ever want from a city. It's a short drive or run to the beach, a short drive to get out of LA, is quiet and safe, and doable on 1300 a month.
