Default Live in Glendale and work/go to school in LA? Sort of a different question.

Now, the basics are, I'm a single 19 year-old male looking to move from San Berdo down to LA so I can attend a proper film school and get an education. I've been searching around LA (city) for a place, but I can't find any decent room. Price isn't really a problem, since I'm on Section 8 and can afford up to 1200.00/month for a single. But, as most of you know, LA is... iffy, at best.

But I know that Glendale is a great city, with better affordable housing. My only thing is the travel to LA. I have a car now, but I don't like to depend on it. I want to be close enough so that I can take a bus/train to school if my car happens to break down (which, all cars end up doing eventually). The ONLY reason I wanted to live IN LA is because of that.. I'd be able to bus or train it back to my school if something happened.

My question is.. if I live in Glendale, how viable is it to catch a bus/train to LA and go to school, or work, out in the city? How's Glendale's public transportation system? If I'm working a full-time in Glendale, would I have enough time to bus down to USC, UCLA, or even the film school on Sunset Blvd? Obviously, a car would get me where I'm going. But I don't like to depend on my wheels.. I'm too accustomed to catching the bus. I don't want to live in Glendale if it could potentially be too much of a problem going back and forth on the bus.

From Glendale I would't know what to honestly tell you on the bus/train issue. You should consider living somewhere close to the red line like in North Hollywood, Valley Village, or Studio City. That would certainly make it a lot easier for you. Especially if you're trying to get to UCLA by bus since there isnt a subway or light rail that would take you there promptly.

There is a metro Station in southern Glendale and southern Burbank (the city to the north). You say USC is an option. You could take the metro to downtown, transfer to the blue line, and take that south to the Grand Station, and take a bus going right down Grand, and I'm sure there's a bus that can take you two blocks to the campus. UCLA on the other hand, is a nightmare to get to from anywhere except on campus. No metro goes there so you would have to take a bus pretty much the whole way.

But yeah. Glendale is a good choice if you would like to be able to used public traspo. once in a while.

I used to live in N. L.A. on the border of Glendale. Glendale is a nice city - I can't think of a "bad" area - but some areas are nicer than others. They have a nice downtown area and cute shops. There's plenty of apartments near the metro link station located on the south side of Glendale near Glendale Memorial Hospital. You might not have to take a but to get to it. Glendale to USC or UCLA is quiet a hike though - even by metrolink standards. I wouldn't take a bus from Glendale to either places.

Glendale has it's own little bus system (I think it's called the Glendale Beeline) that just runs around Glendale. It connects to the Metrolink train system. You can easily use public transportation to run around Glendale and downtown LA and anywhere Metrolink can take you.

Beyond that, like out to UCLA, I dunno. There is no train service there so you'd be at the mercy of the LA City buses.

Dude, Glendale is borrrrr-ing. I'd keep looking for a place near where you're planning to go to school. Assume you've tried craigslist. Don't be afraid of "iffy." Check the areas out before you cross them off your list.

180/181/780/781 buses run from Glendale to Hollywood and run frequently (except late). The Beeline buses run around Glendale with great efficiency and are free (they used to be unless that's changed). Train in Glendale is the Metrolink to Union Station (one stop) then hopping on the Red Line to Hollywood (or the Blue line to Long Beach/Green Line or the Gold Line to Pasadena).

Hollywood is the most public transportation friendly place in L.A. From where I live in Los Feliz it's a 10 minute walk to the subway station. Downtown is also quite PT friendly.

I lived in Glendale for 2 years without a car and it was pretty easy. I just moved a family member into the building I used to live in and it's 850 for a large studio.
