These were our family experiences as well. What town do you live in, so I can move there? Although I am not Mexican, but love Mexico and its people, we found a lot of rage and hate towards them as well, in Orange County, Fallbrook/Bonsall areas. Going by your user's name, I will assume that you are religious. Perhaps, religious people are more accepting than the rest of the population . Again, I am referring to certain areas in California, NOT ALL of California.

Agreed. The block I live on has whites, Latinos, Asians, blacks, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, atheists and more all co-existing very peacefully. If the previous poster thinks Cali is one of the most racist states they really need to get out to the rest of the country to get some perspective!

Stay away from Fallbrook, and Bonsall, in the Northern part of San Diego County. That is where Tom Metzer, the Head of the Aryan Nation lives, unless his house burned in the recent fires, and he has moved to his other headquarters in Sandpoint, Idaho. As a member of a minority group myself, I have been expoxed to racism in these areas, and I have natural blond hair, and a very light skin. I do, however, possess a slightly- accented speech that identifies me as a "foreigner," even though I am, by birth, an American Citizen from the island of Puerto Rico. Always protect yourself, and be on the lookout. |I did not experience much bias in Los Angeles, but that maybe was because I was visiting friends in the Eastern part. Good luck,
Latina7, this is no disrespect to you, because you're expressing things that YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED, but I'm going to have to disagree about Cali being racist. Whites here are not half as racist as whites from chicago, NYC, phili, detroit, etc. I'm black, born and raised in NYC and I find whites in NY to be more racist than anyone I've ever met outside of the city. This includes DC, Virginia and North Carolina, as these are the only outside states I visited on the regular.

I live in a predominantly caucasian/latin neighborhood. Don't see too many blacks, but then again there really isn't a huge black population here to me to begin with. The few born and bred blacks from LA that I have encountered tend to be racist against WHITES. I've said this in prior posts, but there is an irrational fear or extreme distrust or hate of whites that borders on the ridiculous. Seriously. Blacks that are NOT from Cali aren't like this. We don't lump all white people together like LA blacks do. They still call them "devils" here. I haven't heard that term in YEARS.

I've NEVER had a problem with latinos being disrespectful or nasty. If anything, they've tried to go out their way to help me with things despite the language barrier. Whites are cool too. I've actually had a couple of white "biker" boys try to talk to me. I politely decline and keep it moving. Riff raff is riff raff no matter what the race.

I will say this about Los Angeles though, they believe in STEREOTYPES. If you don't fit into the "box" that they're used to seeing, then they lump you with something else. I can't explain it. You have to be an outsider living here to understand. It's not racist per se, just something they're not aware of.

Just because a place is "diverse" doesn't mean racism doesn't exist.

I will agree that California (LA in particular) is more accepting than most cities back east.

I just got back from a 3700 mile road trip. It re-affirmed what I already thought...L.A. is quite racially tolerant. The contrast is amazing. I have friends of all colors and it seems anyone who stays out of trouble doesn't need to worry about such things. I don't include the IE, OC or Antelope Valley in this statement as I live in Los Angeles.

Still no reply from the original poster...?

Hey, waitaminnit...this isn't that pesky Confederate Ghost/Reverend NoGood/DaTownCryer guy goofing around again, is it?

The subject matter (race, 'I want to move to California, but...') is interestingly similar, as is the somewhat rambling sentence structure...

...and that guy *does* have more personalities than Sybil...

Hmmm....

Now some *NEW* mysterious 'Black guy' has appeared out of nowhere, asking yet *another* question about race (dating) and L.A.

Why would a poster feel the need to state what color s/he is? WHO DOES THAT???

Man, that Confederate Ghost is something else.

I think Latina7 is legit. And honestly, I understood the point she was trying to make.

California is the biggest state in the Union; you've got all types. Cali's image is usually seen as fun, free-spirted, progressive, diverse.

But honestly, there *ARE* a few places that are the polar opposite of that.

Personally speaking, North County San Diego *IS* a somewhat homogeneous, xenophobic place. Poway, San Marcos, Vista, etc., not too friendly (or diverse), to me, anyway.

East county towns like El Cajon, Lakeside...it speaks for itself.

Simi Valley? It's reputation is sorta well known.

When Cali is good, it's *GREAT*. Berkeley, Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, Mar Vista, Palms...all live up to the positive 'California image'.

But the state as a whole sort of piggybacks on the reputation of very specific towns and suburbs, and someone moving from out of state who doesn't know that may find themselves in a very awkward position.

Is California just like Alabama? No. Of course not.

But I don't doubt in the least bit that the poster had some problems in Fallbrook. This is a state of dichotomies, of extreme opposites, and people should at least honest enough to acknowledge that.

No, people don't seem to be as...'unsavory' as some people back East, but where do you ('you' rhetorically speaking) live? Because 'California tolerance' definitely varies from place to place.
