Yeah it seems like a lot of cities want to be the next Silicon Valley .

I think there is enough going on in dtla already it's still going to do well without having to be a tech hub like Silicon Valley .

Also does downtown really want to be like Silicon Valley .. From what I've heard it's a pretty boring place to live .

But maybe that's the secret to silicoln valley .. Not as many distractions as a place like LA

This trend where every city in America is announcing that one of its neighborhoods is becoming "the next Silicon Valley" is really freaking annoying. It's also hilariously moronic due to a clear misunderstanding about how Sillicon Valley even works as a tech hub.

And the article is ridiculous. Apparently they think by making Figueroa more fun to walk down with more bars and diners, it'll "become the next Silicon Valley." LOL. Want to know what you need for a strong venture capital market? Capital. Firms with large hedge funds that can take on high risk, high reward investments in start up companies. You need to be located near firms with a pool of financial capital, not a bike lane and a cafe.

Sillicon Valley tech and financial firms are very suburban, they get applicants to move to THEM (not the other way around).

Your right for the most part. To be fair we already have a pretty good thing going on in Santa Monica/Venice. I'm not sure why tech firms would choose DTLA over the beach cities, but there is definitely a muiti-pronged tech industry in LA with firms in Santa Monica/Venice, Playa Del Rey, DTLA, Hollywood & Pasadena.

Yeah that is true regarding capital . You can start a tech company from anywhere but I'm sure it helps to be near the venture capital funds which seem to mostly be based up north .

You can't just walk into a bank and get funding for a tech startup ..

A banker wouldn't touch a company like Facebook or google .

Venture capital firms expect to lose money on most investments .. But the ones that pay off end up paying off big .

The venture capital firm that invested in whatsapp made around a 50x return 5000% return on their investment when the company was bought by Facebook .

The problem is that politicians and these other people don't really get how this works .

It does take some time to get it but not enough people are doing their research and relying on media misinformation or looking at things just on the surface .

The one-percenters, most notably the so-called DINKS (double income no kids to use the old Madison Ave. term) as well as childless singles and some wealthy retired folks might consider living downtown, but families will not, much to the consternation of politicians and urban planners everywhere.

People try to use children to hide behind every bull**** argument. Yes, some families, including some wealthy families like urban living. Living downtown may not be for you, but that doesn't mean you can speak for everyone, including everyone with children.

Perhaps it has to do with the availability of office space? There are a lot of office buildings downtown.
