I realize that I need to up my rental budget so lets keep it $2500-3500. A reasonable commute will be an hour the lesser the better. I have viewed houses in Santa Clarita to as far as Rancho Cucamonga. What will the commute be like coming from cities in these areas.

Thanks

You should be able to get closer than Santa Clarita. Don't even consider Rancho Cucamonga.

I don't know anything about the neighborhoods in Sherman Oaks, but I definitely would start there for commute purposes. I'd also look at Burbank, which is reasonably priced and is good for families.

Don't consider anything east of Los Angeles. No matter what shift you work, it will not be a good commute.

ETA: The same area is currently being discussed in another thread: Husband has new job in Encino...where to look to live?

The commute would be over an hour, probably way over an hour. Rancho Cucamonga would be even worse.

For day shift you can go as far south as westchester. For night shift even further, Torrance, Long beach, Redondo, PV.

I am researching the following cities: Westchester, El Segundo, Redondo, Santa Monica. I would prefer a 4bdrm and hope to find something around $3200/month. How are the school systems?

Thank you for your time

Thank you all for the replies. I have developed a major headache due to the housing search. I also have an option to transfer to the San Diego VA. I will be in town next month for 1 week. I will be looking for housing and test commutes to the Los Angeles VA. I know being closer is the best option. However, I haven't came across a lot of rental properties.

Have you considered looking at a smaller place - do you really need all of that space, or are you just used to big suburban houses? I mean, that seems like a huge house, even with kids in the picture.
