Okay, I keep hearing that it's easier to get a job if you were local. The same principle goes for most places.

Please define local.

Living there (with local address)? Born and raised there? With a locally issued drivers license? A registered resident?

I am not looking for jobs right now (out of the country), but I will start looking for jobs after I settled down in LA, does that make me local? Settling down including getting a drivers license in LA, does this make me local? Or am I still considered foreign?

Do companies hiring people really care if you were born and raised locally/ have local license/ registered? That sounds so ridiculous to me...

I am so confused.

No. Just have an LA/OC/IE address. I'm sure going to college down here helps.

I've heard this is more an issue on the East Coast and in other countries , but maybe that has changed too.

Employers likely don't take people as seriously if they say they want a job in L.A..but don't live in L.A

I doubt companies will care where you were born .

It seems like there are so few L.A Natives if employers did care they would not be able to hire many people.

Not just an address - too many people apply from out of state using a friend's address - "must be local" means actually be living here.

It doesn't matter where you're from originally - companies want you to already live here so if they call you and say "come in for an interview tomorrow morning!" you can actually be there tomorrow morning. Also, so they don't have to offer relocation assistance.

I had this issue when I was planning to move here. Once I put a Long Beach address on my resume and got a disposable phone with a california area code, things moved pretty quickly. I did have to hop on a plane unexpectedly, but for me it was worth it. I had saved up enough money to be able to do that.

Certain jobs funded with local and/or Federal money may have a 'local hire' requirement. Staples Center construction utilized such a plan, and so does Expo Light Rail Line job. I think the local hire requirement is no higher than 30% on the job.
