I can't speak for myself, but my Mom's from Austria and came to the US via L.A. Talk about culture shock.

She has sort of said that if she were to live in Europe again, she'd probably want to do it in Venice, or perhaps somewhere else in Italy.

England-no way. Too much crime and social upheaval. I've been and lived in quite a few places; Germany, Cuba, Philippines, and all over the USA. I've been all over the world for varying time-lengths..Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Hong Kong, all of western Europe except Scandinavia, and never been so far to Africa ( no interest). If I had the $ extra, I'd choose probably a second home in Germany because I feel comfortable there and have spent a lot of time there and intend to spend more. But the USA is where I feel the best, especially where I am now. I don't want to live anywhere else.

Not that you have it listed, but I'd have to choose Ireland.

Don't knock Africa. I've been to Kenya and it's fantastic. You feel a kinship with your ancestors there. (all humans come from Africa.) I went to see the animals, but came back with a profound respect for its people. They consider American and other tourists to be their business partners, and even the poor just go about about their business rather than stopping to give you the third world stare of resentment and hatred. Quite unlike here in Los Angeles, where they never ever hesitate to for even a nanosecond.

Barcelona might be nice for a while. Rome, Italy I've been told is much like Los Angeles, in the sense of fashion, graffiti, and culture. So considering that, my last choice-Rome.

I don't think Rome is much like L.A. I'm italian and i can say that. The weather is almost similar but more cold in winter time, but nothing more. It's another culture, you can breathe the history and roman people are very funny.

Complete ditto to 'the traveller's' assessment of Rome v. L.A. (except I'm not Italian.) The Gypsies are furiously avid pickpockets (to heck with PC, it's true) but Roma's other urban problems bear no resemblance to those of Los Angeles. It's fun. Naples, however, is like Detroit, frantic and outgoing amidst the crimes. And fun.
