I am interested to move to Marina del Rey. I was born in the U.S. and moved to Israel at the age of four.
Now that I am 16 years old, my mother and I want to move to California.
The question is whether we should move to Marina Del Rey or Santa Monica? What is more comfortable?
We have been looking at the beautiful houses and buildings in the marina, prices are good, but does anyone know if out of the monthly payments, there are additional payments?

Thanks,
Amanda

If you own a house or condo, in addition to the mortgage payment you also must pay homeowners insurance and real estate taxes. You might also want earthquake insurance, and if near the ocean, flood insurance. Some people also carry liability insurance to protect them from lawsuits. Renters sometimes want theft insurance.

In a house OR condo, owning OR renting, you will also pay some or all utilities, which are electric, gas, water and garbage. If you own a condo, you will also pay Homeowners Association (HOA) fees each month. If your house is in a development, you will also pay HOA fees.

You might enjoy Santa Monica a little more because it is pedestrian friendly with more shopping choices.

Will your mom need to drive to work? Do you intend to go to college and live at home?

MDR has better swimming near the marina (for those that can tolerate the temps).

MDR also has a noticeably more airport noise especially the southern part (obviously).

MDR feels more like a community. More like a beach town. Just my opinion.

Santa Monica is much more crowded but so much to do. It's also easier to get to Hollywood and DTLA from SM.

In the end you can't go wrong with either location. It's paradise on both sides of the coin.

Santa Monica has some of the worse traffic. If she works in Santa Monica she should live in Santa Monica and you can go to Santa Monica High. If you live in MDR, you can go to Venice High School. In a couple of years, you might attend Santa Monica College, UCLA, LMU, or USC as a local school.

Earthquakes happen all the time but are only felt every few years. When they are felt, it us usually not worse than someone shaking the bed you are lying on or a car driving over a speed bump.
