Hi everybody,
I'm italian and in August I will come in Los Angeles for the first time. I did the error to take the departure flight to move back to Rome at 9 AM; so I'm wondering which would be the best arrangement for my 3 days there. I would like to reserve a room in a hotel near Hollywood, however I'm worried about how to reach the airport in the early morning for my departure, indeed, for this purpose, a hotel closer to the airport would be the best choice. I ask to you who live in Los Angeles. What do you think about that, which are your advice, what should I do?

thanks!

P.S. : my english is not the best one, I hope it is good enough for you to understand

Hey Lugi. Your English is good. If I could speak Italian as well as you write English I'd be very happy.

The truth is there is not much going on at the LA International Airport (LAX), I assume that is where you are flying into. It is not a "bad" area but there is simply not much going on there.

With only three days I think your idea of staying in Hollywood is a good idea to mazimize your time here and be closer to the tourist attractions/nightlife, etc.

It is true the morning you leave you will have to get up early. Sorry, after 9/11 the airport security in the USA is pretty strict and can take a long time. So best to get to the airport 2 hours before your flight leaves (for international flights). I know that is crazy but it is true.

One alternative is to stay in Santa Monica or Venice Beach on your last night (if you can afford it), as that will put you a bit closer to the airport but still near/around tourist attractions/nightlife, shopping, etc.

Good luck and have fun on your trip!!

Another suggestion is to stay close to LAX Airport on your final night. Stay in Manhattan Beach (close to LAX) or Marina Del Rey (also close to LAX). Both places have some nightlife and have a different scene than Hollywood.

- You can ask the hotel to arrange a taxi pickup at 6:00 AM. Traffic from Hollywood to LAX would be about 30-45 minutes in the morning via streets
- Some Hotels offer a bus or shuttle to the Airport.

The airport to the city Hollywood/Downtown/Santa Monica is not that far. If your flight back to Rome is on a Saturday or Sunday morning, they the highways are dont have much traffic. If you drive to the airport on a weekday morning. You will need to leave at 6am which the traffic is not bad yet. You can be at the airport by 630 or 7am, return your rental car and be at your terminal with time.

If you dont have a car, you can catch a $8 Flyaway shuttle bus at Los Angeles Union Station to LAX that leaves every 20-30 mins starting from 5:00am. You can catch the Red Line subway to there takes 25 minutes ($1.50 plus $1 for the transit TAP card)=$2.50

You can also arrange a shuttle from your hotel to the airport: Primetime and Super Shuttle are the main companies. They usually pick up earlier than you want because they need to pick up many people, then drive. Price from around $20-$30.

The other option is a taxi. Could cost around $50 or less plus tax and tip.

I would stay near places I want to visit. Downtown or Hollywood are very central areas . Both have lots of public transportation options if you dont want to drive everywhere. LAX can be too far if you want to travel to see many tourist places via car or public transit.

Thank you guys,
I think I'm going to stay the first two days in a central area like Hollywood and then move to an hotel close to the airport for the last night. I will rent a car, so I hope this relocation will be not too annoying.

I'm looking forward to come there and visit your city

That would probably be your best bet. There are several hotels near the airport with shuttle service. I would drop your car off the last afternoon and take a shuttle to your hotel or just leave your hotel the last morning a few hours prior to departure giving yourself time to return the car and get through security.
