Santa Monica is a nice place , and I grew up on the Westside so have spent a lot of time there...but I feel it's a bit overrated and the prices have really gotten insane. Crazy high rents and little shacks for over 1.2million..

nothing overrated about that.

Yeah it has a lot of things that would make it expensive. High paying jobs nearby , Huge tourist destination, desirable weather, beach nearby.

But if you don't have one of those high paying jobs or own a successful business makes it very hard or impossible to live there...kind of like Manhattan in NYC .

one of the big reason is that its in or next to the urban core.

Theres no place that's like that area in southern California.

yep. santa monica combines the beach weather and resort environment with proximity to america's largest county and second largest city. unfortunately, traffic makes that sound better than it actually is. if you live in santa monica you're mostly stuck there. but it sure beats living in a place like pismo beach or mendocino - beautiful beach towns with nothing nearby and nothing to do.

Yeah true, that is a good point. I think people often don't think about the difficulty of getting out of santa monica to other parts of L.A . With parts of L.A that are further east become more popular like Downtown L.A and the surrounding areas this has become more of an issue. When Santa Monica and the Westside was more the hip place to be it was a different situation.

If you want to live near the water anywhere in the lower 48 states, be prepared to pay through the nose; Santa Monica has been a very desirable area in which to live for decades, and that's not about to change.

$1,000 a month and living in Santa Monica? Ain't happening, unless someone rents you a room free of charge.

that's how much I spend on food here.
Sounds like you need to re-evaluate your budget.

It's not crazy to spend $1000mo on food if you think about it that's
$33 a day .

I just spent like $20 on lunch , it was a casual type place where you order at the counter .. I had salmon though so it was a decent value with soda . I wouldn't do that every day though.

I'm sure a lot in LA are spending $1000 or more on food especially going out .

Also depends if you include alcohol in the food budget too.

I doubt many are breaking it down by food and liquor
If you go out and have a couple drinks with your meal it would get categorized as "dining out "
