I am looking to relocate in January. Am single in my 20's and will be working an entry level professional job. I know California is an automobile-mecca but I don't drive and need an area with public transit-preferably subway/train. Was thinking Burbank as housing seems to be slightly lower. Any suggestions?

There's no subway or train that goes there. I'd just live in Sherman Oaks and bike to work. If not, you can take the Orange Line (a bus line with its own dedicated street) to one of the stops in Van Nuys (north of Sherman Oaks) and then take another bus south to work. Too much of a hassle for me, though.

Have a friend who moved to Los Angeles and doesn't drive. He's a professor at UCLA, found an apartment nearby but takes the bus to work.

In general, there are dozens of neighborhoods in LA that are good for car free living. There are the usual suspects (Downtown, Pasadena, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Los Feliz, Koreatown, Westwood, Santa Monica) as well as a few neighborhoods that have improved in this regard (Miracle Mile, Mid City West, Culver City, Highland Park, North Hollywood, Glendale).
