My partner and I lived in Highland park for a year and mostly enjoyed it, except for the trash, tagging, and noise that seems to be relatively ubiquitous in LA. We want to buy but are already priced out of Highland Park. We are considering Boyle heights. We love going to Little Tokyo and DTLA, and it is pretty convenient to the metro and freeway.

That said, I am a bit concerned about the crime rates/gangs and that we might not be accepted there. We are a gay white couple, planning to adopt in the next few years. Highland park was very welcoming! and all of our neighbors were Hispanic families, but I had read that BH can be a bit concerned about gentrification.

We would want to be active in things to improve our community, but we both grew up working class and we aren't looking for specialty coffee and ballet barre classes. We just want a nice home to raise a kid or two, have a garden, etc.

Is BH a good place to live? Is it relatively safe? Would we be able to be part of community at all? We heard the area near the metro is best for buying, but it is also more expensive. Is the area closer to the 10, like between Marengo and Cesar Chavez bad?
