Hey Los Angelenos,
My daughter will be starting 9th grade next year. I need to send her to a good high school (one that doesn't cost 60 grand a year.) Does anyone have any suggestions???

You don’t want to send your daughter to North Hollywood High. It's not what it used to be. It has a Great Schools rating of 6 out of 10.

Some of the good private schools near Studio City include Buckley School and Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks and Campbell Hall, Oakwood, and Harvard-Westlake in North Hollywood.

The poster stated that they did not want to spend $60k on private school. Unfortunetly you will have to pick the best of the mediocre and North Hollywood High would be it for your district unless you can get a permit or win a lottery in another district. They pretty much all suck. We moved to Westlake Village for this reason years ago. Good luck and go to greatschools.com and homefair to gather information on schools.

Dont know if you're Catholic or if youre opposed to your child attending a Catholic school, but Notre Dame College Prep in Sherman Oaks is a good choice. Its only about $10,000 per year.

I agree and you don't have to be Catholic anymore to go there.

None of the private prep schools in Los Angeles cost $60K. And most all of them offer financial aid to students based on need.

Re: North Hollywood and public schools
Charliemark,
Are you familiar with LAUSD choices brochure?
There still may be time to fill out a late one for a magnet school option, or just browse it for the open school choices for May.
My belief is that you have to visit the school and the prospective student needs to match the school philosophy and environment. Is your daughter documented as gifted? Does she need a small environment? Does she love theatre arts, language arts, academia, science, math, or animals? What's her vocational passion and life goal? North Hollywood High might be a good match. They have different magnet programs within the school. Look at the website, then take a tour ASAP with your daughter. If you both like the school, make sure the school knows it. Write a follow up email.

I would not send my child to N. Hollywood High either.
I really don't know much about the private schools as my teaching experience in LAUSD has been middle and high schools.
Did your daughter go to Reed Middle this year?
