President Obama will declare the designation on Friday at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.

The lure of a San Gabriel Mountains wilderness teeming with wildlife, rivers and breathtaking panoramas is so strong that it now draws 3 million annual visitors whose presence, paradoxically, has overrun the region and degraded its beauty. President Obama will address that reality Friday by announcing that he is designating part of the mountains a national monument.

People on the interwebs say that Bonelli Park was chosen because it's next to Brackett Field (a small airport). The Pres could get in and out of the area fast if needed.

Bonelli Park has lots of wide-open spaces too. Good for security, I guess. Dunno.

They are called "public lands" for a reason. So the "public" can use them. This will further cut off people from using the lands their tax dollars support.

Who asked for the designation? Were the cities and counties effected consulted? Whatever happened to democracy instead of presidential ukase?

Congresswoman Judy Chu asked for it. She had worked on it for over 10 years... it's nothing new.

SB County opted out of the plan, and that's why only a very small piece of the SB County side of the mountains is included.
